Type: Part-time /Commission

Expiry Date: May 1, 2011 (flexible hours)

Location: Toronto, ON

StudentsaverTM Discount program

Studentsaver is a national student discount program run by the Canadian Federation of Students-Services on a non-profit basis. The purpose of the program is to help students save money on everyday purchases like books, clothing, food, and entertainment. To access discounts, students simply present their Studentsaver card or International Student Identity Card (ISIC). Established in 1982, Studentsaver is Canada's original student discount program.

In communities throughout Canada, the program solicits the participation of local, often independent, businesses. The only cost to businesses for participating is the value of the discount they choose to offer students. Participating businesses benefit by attracting the college and university student population to their products and services through free promotion-including listings in the Studentsaver booklet and on the Studentsaver web site (www.studentsaver.ca).

Each year, CESAR members receive their Studentsaver Card in the Member's Handbook and Dayplanner. Students simply take their card to any of the participating businesses to receive discounts ranging from 10% to 50% off purchased goods and services. In addition to discounts, the card acts as a CFS membership card.

Job Description

As a Local Discount Solicitor, you would work to secure Studentsaver discounts from businesses in your community-especially within the vicinity of your campus-throughout the months of March and April. You would make contact with businesses, usually in person, to invite them to participate in the program by providing a Studentsaver discount. To carry out the job, you would be provided with background information, promotional materials, and discount agreement forms. You would report on a weekly basis to the Regional or Local Discount Coordinator.

Compensation

Remuneration is on a commission basis. Each Local Discount Solicitor will be paid as follows.

  • $10 for each of the first 20 new contracts (i.e., 1-20).

  • $15 for each new contract that is secured beyond the first 40.

OR

If you prefer to submit your explanation in a letter format, you can write your letter using the template letters provided on this site and submit a paper version.

You submit your letter EITHER using the Supplementary form OR using a letter format but not both.

3.       Submit extra documentation that proves the claims you have made in your explanation, including your Fresh Start Activity Tracker.

You must submit this reinstatement application IN PERSON to your department, addressed to your Program Advisor.

Tip:  When submitting your documents to your department's Program Advisor, attach all your documents together with a paper clip and submit them together.  Make sure your name and student number is included, and note that you are part of the Fresh Start program.

You will be contacted by email by a program advisor once your application has been reviewed. The time frame for this varies by program.

B.    Apply for reinstatement to a different program from your original home program.

Please take note of these special instructions.  Your application has both an online component and a paper submission component if you wish to supplement that.  It can be a little confusing, so please read instructions carefully and follow these steps:

1.       Submit this form ONLINE: http://www.ryerson.ca/undergraduate/admission/apply/forms/RU_Application.html

This form MUST be submitted online.  Do not print it off and come in and hand it anywhere.

2.       Submit an explanation of what went wrong and what steps you have taken in the last 12 months to fix the problems so that they don't impede you in future classes.  You can submit your explanation ONLINE by using the Ryerson Supplementary Reinstatement form  found here: http://www.ryerson.ca/undergraduate/admission/downloads/Supp_Form.pdf

OR

If you prefer to submit your explanation in a letter format, you can write your letter using the template letters provided on this site and submit a paper version IN PERSON directly to Client Services Admissions on the first floor of Jorgensen Hall.  You can address your letter to "Undergraduate Admissions."

You submit your letter EITHER online using the Supplementary form OR in person to Admissions but not both.  If submitting in person, be sure to include your student # prominently so that they can match up your paper submission with your electronic one.

3.       Submit extra documentation that proves the claims you have made in your explanation, including your Fresh Start Activity Tracker, IN PERSON to Client Services (Admissions) on the first floor of Jorgensen Hall. Extra documentation cannot be submitted online in any way.  Make sure your Ryerson student number is displayed prominently on the documentation you intend to submit

Tip: When submitting your documents to client services, attach all your documents together with a paper clip and submit them together.  Make sure your name and student number is included, and note that you are part of the Fresh Start program.

Note: You can apply to a maximum of 2 programs other than your home program.

Once your application is received, you will receive an acknowledgement communication in email and also snail mail.  It will confirm the program they applied to and give info to watch the process of the application. It will tell them to go on the Choose Ryerson porthole (establish an identity for themselves)

C.     If you are applying for reinstatement to your department (original program) AND to a different program from your original home program.

If you are planning to apply to BOTH your home program and for admission into a NEW PROGRAM you must follow the appropriate procedures described above for each.  You submit your reinstatement application to your home program IN PERSON, to your Department Program Advisor.  If you are applying to a NEW PROGRAM you submit the appropriate forms ONLINE and additional information IN PERSON to the Client Services department of Admissions on the first floor of Jorgensen Hall.

FAQs:

What other documentation and information can I include in my reinstatement letter?

You should include anything that might help you demonstrate that you have taken the steps you said you have to improve.  If you need help with the letter, refer to documents on this site[s1] .

I am applying to transfer to a new program what information will help show why change is a positive step?

In your letter when you describe what steps you have taken to improve the situation, express your change in attitude towards your programs through the experiences you have had with related courses or personal experiences.  Reflect on why you believe you are more interested in this new program and what makes you better suited for it.  This reflection will have stronger value if you have documentation to show that you have taken steps in this direction to start making this subject part of your future.

I'm not ready to come back in Fall 2011.  Can I apply for reinstatement at a later date?

Yes, but be aware of two important factors.  First is if you do not meet the reinstatement deadline for this session, the next possible reinstatement application opportunity will be in February of next year.  You will be eligible for reinstatement in Fall 2012.  Second, you should note the period of time you have to finish your degree.  You have a maximum of 8 years to complete your degree.  Contact the Dean of your Faculty if you think you might not be able to meet this timeline.  Also, be aware that if academic requirements change in the time you are away, you are responsible to meet these changes.

JOIN THE EDUCATION COALITION AT RYERSON!

In 2008, after years of calling for a national system of grants, students lobby the Federal Government and WIN:

  • $350 million Canada Student Grant Program

The Canada Student Grant Program began at $350 million and is set to increase to over $430 million by 2012. It is based on income, not performance, and reaches approximately 245,000 students each year. The grant is $400 per semester for middle-income students and $1000 per semester for low-income students.

But our work continues...

Cumulative student debt in Canada has surpassed $15 billion not counting provincial debt (like OSAP) or private loans. Despite the grants program, many students will still graduate with mortgage-sized debt loads. Today, students with both government and private loans owe an average of $37,500 upon graduation. Without tuition fee reductions, the value of the new grant will be eroded over time.

What will you do about it?

EDUCATION IS A RIGHT Campaign

Right now, students all across the country are taking action for education. Some are signing postcards that call on the Federal Government to take responsibility and ensure that all students in Canada can afford a high-quality education. Others are having their photos taken with a message about education that will be uploaded onto www.educationisaright.ca a new website to be launched in October that will serve as a virtual wall of student debt to be shared with students all across the country and raise awareness about the cost of education and the impact of student debt.

Want to get involved?

Tell Ontario Members of Parliament to show that they believe that education is a right, not a privilege by taking action to ensure that post-secondary education in Canada remains affordable and public.

Send an email asking for their support in setting a national vision for post-secondary education that ensures accessible, high-quality, public post-secondary education for all students, regardless of income or where in Canada you study.
